ITM Power has today announced it has applied for planning for a 20MW electrolyser to be sited at Scottish Power’s Whitelee Wind Farm near Glasgow, the UK’s largest onshore wind farm.

If granted, the new electrolyser facility would represent a doubling in the planned capacity and is in response to market demand. A decision on the planning application is expected by the end of Autumn 2021.

The project is designed to provide carbon-free transport and clean air for communities across Glasgow, a city that aims to become the first net-zero city in the UK by 2030.

The project would aim to supply hydrogen to the commercial market before 2023.

“This is an exciting milestone based on market development for green hydrogen for the city of Glasgow, that will see the UK’s largest electrolyser deployment to date being realised in Scotland,” said ITM Power Chief Executive Graham Cooley.

The proposed project will be led by Scottish Power and engineered an operated by BOC using wind and solar power produced by Scottish Power Renewables. The project would incorporate the planned 20MW electrolyser delivered by ITM Power (LON:ITM).

“Whitelee keeps breaking barriers, first the UK’s largest onshore wind farm, and soon to be home to the UK’s largest electrolyser,” said Scottish Power’s Hydrogen Director Barry Carruthers. “The site has played a vital role in helping the UK to decarbonise and we look forward to delivering another vital form of zero carbon energy generation at the site to help Glasgow and Scotland achieve their net zero goals.”

At 10:40BST, ITM Power shares were trading lower by 2.3% at 479.29p. Scottish Power is owned by Spanish utilities companies Iberdrola (MC:IBE).
