The Bank of England (BoE) has announced it has appointed Huw Pill as Chief Economist and Executive Director for Monetary Analysis. He will begin in his role on 6th September 2021.

Pill will also take a seat on the BoE’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), the group that is responsible for making decisions about the Bank Rate and the central bank’s quantitative easing programme. Pill is replacing Andrew Haldane, who left his role as Chief Economist on 30th June 2021.

Pill will report to Bank of England Deputy Governor for Monetary Policy Ben Broadbent.

“I am delighted about the appointment of Huw Pill as the Bank’s new Chief Economist,” Broadbent said. “His breadth of experience across monetary policy, economic research and financial markets will be invaluable to the Bank and the MPC.”

Previous Experience
Pill is joining the BoE from the Harvard Business School where he has been senior lecturer since 2018. Previously, Pill was Chief European Economist at Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) and has also had a number of senior positions at the European Central Bank.

Pill previously worked for the BoE as an economist between 1990-1992.

“It is a great privilege to rejoin the Bank and have the opportunity to contribute to the work of the MPC and the Bank more broadly at what remains a challenging time for monetary policy and central banking,” Pill said in a statement.

Governor of the BoE, Andrew Bailey, said: “Huw will make a major contribution to monetary policy – and to the broader work of the Bank. I greatly look forward to working with him.”

Speaking about the appointment on Twitter (NYSE:TWTR), Pictet Global Macro Strategist Frederik Ducrozet said Pill was a “pragmatic dove as far as I can tell”.
