Italy’s Meloni says EU aid package on the way for Tunisia

The leaders of Italy, the Netherlands and of the European Commission should bring an EU aid package when they visit Tunisia at the weekend, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Friday.

Meloni will travel to Tunis on Sunday with her Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte and the EU commission’s Ursula von der Leyen, looking to make progress in unblocking loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the north African state.

Meloni said the European aid package due to be announced would pave the way for the release of the IMF funding.

“It seems to me that important steps forward are being taken,” Meloni said.
